Classroom Discipline: In 5th grade, we use a “call system” when it comes to disciplining inappropriate behavior. Students can receive calls for the following behavior: late work, disrespect, noise, out of place, and off-task. Students will receive an initial warning, followed by a “call” if the inappropriate behavior continues. The calls will be recorded on a call chart.
These calls can affect your child in the following ways: First of all, if they have accumulated too many calls when it comes time for a fun activity, such as reward time, a lyceum, etc., they will have to miss out on that activity. The other 5th grade teachers and I will come up with what the limit number of calls would be before each event. In other words, your child will know ahead of time what the limit of calls will be before they would have to miss the fun activity. They will be able to monitor their progress on the call chart everyday.
Another way these calls will affect your child is when it comes time for Micro-Community. For each call they receive each week, they will have to pay our classroom bank 1 micro-unit. For example, if a student received 10 calls for the week, he/she would pay 10 micro-units. It can be compared to receiving a fine for an inappropriate action. It really helps the students understand how they are responsible for their actions.
Grades: For each subject, 60% of your child’s grade will be determined from daily work scores, and 40% will be from their test and quiz scores. Grades will be sent home at mid-quarter and at the end of each quarter. Please take the time to sit down with your child at these times and look their grades over with them. It is a great time to acknowledge your child for their hard work and help them set goals for improvement in other areas.
