In 5th grade, students are placed in either the Houghton Mifflin or Reading Mastery Reading curriculum. These curriculums also have built-in English and Spelling components. In both of these programs, students read stories, learn new vocabulary words, apply comprehension skills, use prior knowledge through use of thinking strategies such as recall, analysis, inference, synthesis, and much, much more!!! Students have a textbook and a workbook to help them apply and sharpen the skills they are learning!
We recommend that students read 15-30 minutes each night. This will help increase oral reading fluency (how many words your child can read correctly in a minute) as well as help brush up their comprehension skills. A great at-home writing activity would be to have your child keep a journal to record their thoughts about what they have read, what they did that day, etc.
